Exports were down nearly 20% for the first 2 months of 2024 compared to last year.
Main Culprit: Fertiliser exports.
According to the Department of Statistics (DoS), the “other” items with the largest drops were:
Mineral & Chemical Fertilisers -84.2% (-267 mil JODs)
Miscellaneous Edible Preparations -43.7% (-17.2 mil JODs)
Live animals -84.3% (-13.7 mil JODs)
Iron & Steel -66.1% (-12.7 mil JODs)
Cement -97.2% (-12.7 mil JODs)
What is the underlying cause then: Shipping route disruption? Exported goods diverted for local consumption? Or are we selling the same amount of goods at a lower price?
