Talabat is now in the crosshairs of the boycott campaign - that’s because its publicly traded parent company Delivery Hero (DHER) is allegedly pro-Zionist.
Let’s look at the facts on the ground: According to Phoenix Center for Economic Studies, Jordan has 25,000 people working for delivery applications, 11,600 working for ride hailing apps. For comparison, the textile industry in Jordan employs over 89,000.
(Side note: 36,000 drivers for digital apps is 2.5% of total employed Jordanians; and they apparently are not registered with social security, therefore not technically considered part of the labour force)
So what’s next? What’s the alternative? Uber owned Careem? Or is there a local Jordanian alternative to take things over? Funnily enough, ifood.jo 🇯🇴 was one until it was acquired in 2014 by Yemeksepeti 🇹🇷 which in turn was acquired by Delivery Hero 🇩🇪in 2015 and was rebranded as Talabat.
Maybe the best thing would be to go up the dusty attic and bring back Meals on Wheels.
Interesting, the boycott was definitely a positive shift for “made in Jordan”. I assume some industries have high barrier of entry to reach same level of scale as international competitors. I would also argue that a relevant number of delivery employees are doing this as a secondary job but I don’t have the numbers to back it up. Thank you!
